Marlin Grove Remodel Photos

by Homework Remodels

Before...

Marlin Grove has always been one of the best examples of mid century modern architecture in Phoenix.

This home was designed and built by Ralph Haver in 1952.

The present owners had fallen in love with this house long before they were able to buy it.  Luckily Brett heard that the owner was planning to sell it before it went on the market.  After buying it, the owners have gradually transformed it inside and out into the beautiful property it is today.

The following photos show how the homes boxed in, cramped kitchen was opened up to create a totally livable space.

Brett Hobza, an architect and Homework Remodels worked closely together on this remodel both in design and in its construction.

In addition to aesthetics, attention was paid to all aspects of green remodeling and recycling. Sustainable eco-friendly fixtures, appliances and building materials were used wherever possible.

This photo illustrates how the original island concept of Ralph Haver closed off the space from the surrounding areas.

Installing a true island wrapped with Silestone opens the kitchen for entertaining and more comfortable use of the space.

Completely revamping the kitchen with beautiful new Ultracraft cabinets, cable lighting and stainless steel appliances has brought the owners dream of a totally open and functional space to life.

The new Energy Star rated appliances will conserve energy resources for years to come.

The Caesarstone countertops were a green choice demonstrated by their certifications by the National Health and Safety Foundation and the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute.  This means Caesarstone Quartz is a Safer Surface for areas where food preparation takes place, while protecting the quality of your indoor air quality because it has low-to-no emission (off gassing) of toxic chemicals into the indoor environment.

This is a great example of an original Haver kitchen. It's fun to see but not so great to use.

Glass tile walls and touch to activate low voltage under cabinet lighting make for a great work area for meal preparation.

Low voltage cable lighting parallel the ceiling beams, light the kitchen without conflicting with the home's Ralph Haver post and beam design features.

The low voltage lighting was chosen to conserve energy and complement numerous other eco-friendly, green design features of our remodel.

Design features such as floating cabinets and stainless steel kick plates under the kitchen cabinetry add to the totally custom look.

Entertaining comes easy with a custom island complete with a wine frig to keep refreshments handy and just the right temperature.

The family area of the home was also redone with all new cable lighting, beautiful rectified porcelain floor tiles and a new color scheme on the walls and ceiling.

The painting was done with low VOC paint to limit off-gassing and help protect the environment.

The guest bathroom was not to be outdone by the rest of our mid-century modern make-over.

All new fixtures were installed to create all new bath that is as much a pleasure to use as it is to behold.

The glass wall tiles encircling the shower and wrapping around the adjacent wall give the room a rich feel and beautiful depth of color.

The cross reed patterned glass block window fills the room with light. The use of cross reed glass mirrors a glsss choice favored by the homes original designer Ralph Haver.

The all new low-flow water fixtures will help conserve water.
